Events and Happenings!

October 15, 2009

Last night I went to a discussion chaired by Ken McLeod, in his capacity as writer-in-residence at the Genomics Dept. of the university, down at Moray House.

Interesting stuff, about the perception of scientists as promulgated by works of written sf. And he had asked if I could sell some books during the intervals, so I made some money as well! And got free drink.

But the big news is that Madeleine got a phone call about her operation offering her a cancellation spot – which, after due consultation with her boss, she accepted.
So her 2nd hip op will be on Monday.

This Monday! 19th October, and we expect that she’ll be home by the weekend and the recovery process will start all over again! But this time she’ll have two good hips, not a replacement and one that has been becoming increasingly painful as the other side improved…

  1. Good to hear that Madeleine has got her appointment – best wishes!

the artworks bit – very beautiful …..

  2. Ah, Phil Plait’s blog – I used to look at his website sometimes, and he was a member of a messageboard I’m on, but I’ve never thought to look for his blog! Thanks.
Madeleine’s just been off sick for a day with some sort of bug or something, but she’s recovered (and checked with her doc & the hospital) and she’s all set for Monday.
Except for the huge amount of stuff she wants to do beforehand!

I’m interested. What did he say?

Good luck to Madeleine. I look forward to racing her next August.

  4. You’re coming back up again? Good to hear!

It started with several brief descriptions of scientists from some classic books – Frankenstein, Dr.Moreau, an EE Doc Smith book & Timescape by Greg Benford (recommended, if you come across it) and then after some opening remarks by the panel, it quickly degenerated into a free-wheeling discussion of all sorts of aspects of science in the media! ;-)
Ken can describe it better in his blog post:

And it also got reviewed in Scotland on Sunday
(Scotland’s upmarket Sunday paper) yesterday and the Alba ad Astra book also got namechecked very favourably. :-) But I’ve not found an on-line version of the article yet.
    I’ll add a link if I do.
edit: my flickr photo of it

As I write, Madeleine is probably unconscious but out of surgery. I’m told there’s no point phoning quite yet, I’ll be doing that in an hour or two, and visiting later.
