End of the Year…

December 31, 2008

A few things we’ve done recently that I’ve not mentioned:

The Zoo (last Saturday) and the botanic gardens (last Sunday)

The Day the Earth Stood Still was big and fun! I didn’t hear the classic phrase, but some people claim it was said. If it was, it certainly wasn’t in the same context as in the original…

On a completely different scale, Dean Spanley is a period film about a Dean’s secret, revealed only when he’s tipsy on his favourite obscure wine. Top cast – Peter O’Toole & Sam Neill – and a large touch of whimsy! We both enjoyed it a lot, in a low key sort of way. It’s based on a short Lord Dunsany novel written in 1936 and one minor niggle is that all the film adverts, etc. refer to him as Baron Dunsany. This may be accurate, but the entire literary world refers to him as ‘Lord’ not ‘Baron’ Dunsany (except for the few that insist on calling him his given name of  Edward Plunket)

The new edition of the book looks great; the novel, the screenplay and several interviews and essays, together with two inserts of stills from the film – in hardcovers for only a tenner!

After work last night, I took Madeleine (well, I met her there!) for a meal at the new Hotel Du Vin, which has very recently emerged from it’s scaffolding up at Bristo Place (the old Blood Donor centre) where a massive rebuild and refurbishment of the site has taken place. Nice little bistro/bar mezzanine upstairs looking down into a very traditional-looking restaurant – all dark wood and framed paintings & posters on the walls.
After a glass of wine and some free olives and nuts, we went downstairs and had the special offer menu choices, so our choice was limited, but it was very nice and we may well be lured back again soon!

Reindeer in Red

Reindeer in Red

A Christmas post! On Sunday we went down to Princes Street Gardens to see the reindeer. There were 9 or 10, I guess, in the corral, feeding, dozing, running about a bit, generally doing reindeer things, and then a couple got harnessed up, like this guy; and were led off to be walked around the Gardens so kids could see them close up and pat them, etc.
We then went up to the Grassmarket, looking empty and windswept, and had a light lunch at the Lot – sausage and mash for me, salady bruschetta for Madeleine – and then across to the French Connection Crepe van to sign their petion agains losing their licence. If it had been warmer, maybe we’d have had a crepe there instead of eating indoors…

Then up Victoria Street to see the fire damage (photos in my Flickr stream; see link on the right) and along to the museum to see their Jean Muir exhibition. M owns a couple of items and wanted to see more. And I hadn’t realised that the scary photo of a model advertising the exhibition was a young Joanna Lumley! Much younger even than when she played Purdey in the New Avengers!
I’ve been watching some repeats of that recently – still watchable, but not to be taken at all seriously!

Busy Weekends…

December 8, 2008

and exiting, in some ways, but sometimes not really very interesting!

Three weeks ago we spent most of Sunday packing up all of Madeleine’s accumulated arts & crafts material, etc. in her basement studio in Jamaica Street – that was fun! Well, not really…

And two weeks ago we spent most of Sunday moving  and installing it all in her new studio space down in Leith, at an artists studio complex called Coburg House almost on the Water of Leith near the bridge at Sandport Place. And then we made two or three other visits in the evenings to sort stuff out and prepare for the Open Studios weekend that’s just finished!

This was all rather hurried in order to be ready for the open weekend but everything got done in time, at least as far as I know; maybe Madeleine meant to have a lot more done, I’m not sure. Anyway, a champagne opening on the Friday evening, with Madeleine’s own Coburg Cake being made and distributed around all the other artists yesterday! (It’s a traditional cake whose name suits the venue perfectly!). Very good! :)

So, quite a lot accomplished, but no photos to show for it! Except this tiny aerial shot:

Which is actually frosty moss & lichen on Sandport Bridge…
