Autumn

November 3, 2008

Well, the clocks have changed and it’s definitely Autumn. It’s just that it feels like Winter! Brrrr.

Inverleith Pond, with Autumnal Trees

Inverleith Pond, with Autumnal Trees

We took a walk on Sunday afternoon down around Inverleith Park and it’s pond, with loads of swans and seagulls, together with occasional ducks and pigeons – very nice! We meandered via the little sundial garden and across the rather muddy rugby pitches and on to look at the outside of the new defences at the West Gate of the Botanics… I know it’s meant to be an attractive new visitor centre/shop/entrance, but at the moment, in the late afternoon sun, the grim slate surfaces don’t look very inviting! A low, round slate turret on the left, a sloping driveway with a slate wall looming over it on one side joining on to what looks likes like a slate blockhouse, with an observation window to see who’s approaching the big, heavy gates. Just needs a drawbridge! The wooden frontage being constructed beside it looks a bit less intimidating, though…

And coffee & beer together with a light snack – spicy pumpkin soup & um, smoked fish pate of some sort – at the Orchard Bar was very warming afterwards…

An addendum to the Neil Gaiman event; I’m assured that the questions were, indeed, submitted by the audience shortly before the event – apparently because Neil decided not to accept roving-mic questions live from the audience. Pity they had already hired the mics when he changed his mind.
